I REALLY want to be a better person (inspired by Peter Kreeft).

One of the best books I've ever read is "Your Questions, God's Answers" by Peter Kreeft. There are simple explanations of how we should understand issues connected with our faith. This book is a present from God. Now I'll write why I REALLY want to be a better person.

The question nr 41 (in Kreeft's book) is "How can I become a better person?" Many years ago I discovered that I really want to be better and better Christian (I am a Catholic). Now I'm 47 years old. People should be better and better, it is our life task to be calmer, happier, better for ourseleves and other people. If we really focus on improving our behaviour, emotions etc., we can succeed. We don't achieve it alone, we are too weak, but with God all things are possible. Ora et labora. (Pray and work). You will see results.

In this part I will share ideas covered on pages 80 and 81 of the mentioned book. The author gives us these "tools" (we can use them during a proccess of becoming a better person):

"1. Trusting does more than trying. (Prov 3:5-6).

2. First things first: God first, love first. (Mt 22:36-39).

3. Become sensitive to the voice of conscience, and act as soon as you feel conscience nudging you. Give yourself no time to make excuses.

4. Offer your thinking to God as well as your acting, for all our acting comes from our thoughts. (…)

5. (…) Christian friends reinforce each other. So do companions in sin. Never be a snob, but seek out good  friends. (…) (Prov 17:17 and I Thess 5:11).

6. Be utterly honest with yourself and with God (Prov 2:6-8). It's harder than you think. We love to flatter and fool ourselves.

7. Above all, pray (Phil 4:6-7). God is the source of all goodness, and we get close to him in prayer. Prayer can change the world. Prayer can change your life."

What can I add to the above ideas? I think that nothing. These pieces of advice are simple and easy to use. If we REALLY want to be better, we will find time for practising being better. God bless you all.

"What is it to be a Christian?" (according to Peter Kreeft)

Currently I am reading the book entitled "Your Questions, God's Answers" (by Peter Kreeft). There are 64 questions and the same number of answers given by the author. The answers are very important if we want to understand our Catholic faith. One of the questions is the following: "What is it to be a Christian?" The author writes that "different people will give different answers to that question". Then, he continues to explain that it is Jesus who knows the answer to that question. I will quote the author's words: "What does he say? He (Jesus) says his followers are to become parts of him, incorporated into his body. "I am the vine, and you are the branches" (Jn 15:5) - the same life, the same plant. A Christian is a branch of Christ, a part of Christ. Together, Christians are the Church, the body of Christ (Eph 5:30; Col 1:18)." I am a Catholic. I believe that all I have to know is written in the Bible. God gave us Hi...

What is spiritual development? (my opinion)

Spiritual development is everything that brings me closer to God, that which is related to my prayer life. When do I know that I am growing spiritually? It seems to me that my development (i.e. progress) is expressed in the fact that I am calmer year by year believing that I am heading towards God, towards heaven, towards my final destiny. I don't often reflect on how much I have developed spiritually during my life. Certainly, my attendance at Mass (at least on Sundays and feast days), my participation in the sacraments (e.g., Penance, Holy Communion, Anointing of the Sick), and my daily prayer help me to grow spiritually. I also observe my emotions, my attitude towards people, my falls into one sin or another, I observe if my relationships with people are better, if I as a person become more generous and kind towards my neighbour and the Catholic Church. I am already 49 years old, and age obliges one to become better and better man. I believe that a Christian should develop spiri...

Your questions, God's answers - about a book written by Peter Kreeft.

Yesterday I managed to buy some books - some of them in Italian and some in English. Nearly all of them are connected with faith and God. I'd like to write something about one of these books, namely "Your Questions, God's Answers". The book (author: Peter Kreeft) may be useful for teenagers and their parents. On the back cover of this book we can read: "Kreeft uses Scripture to provide God's profound answers to the most common and important questions young people ask about the deeper meaning of life, their own identity, overcoming failure and temptation, the mystery of God's love, and much more." My copy was published by Ignatius Press. It consists of 121 pages. In my opinion the questions and answers (there are 64 questions) may help teenagers and their parents in their conversations. Some of the questions are: "How can I find out who I really am?", "How will the Bible help me to know myself?", "How can I understand...
